I have a great book to tell you about! It’s called Take Your Best Shot. It’s about a boy named Jackson, a 6th grade in-house team basketball player, whose parents are divorced and his mom is getting remarried. It’s written by John Coy, and it’s a realistic fiction book. In the story the best player on Jackson’s team moves up to the traveling team. Read it to see what happens when they face an amazing team without their best player. When I read that part, I was shocked. When I was reading about them playing I couldn’t set it down, and if you love shooting hoops then you’ll love this book even more! Like Jackson says, I love this game, and I love this book.

The title of my book is Out Of My Mind. The author is Sharon Draper. This book is Realistic fiction. The main character is Melody. Melody can't walk, write or talk! But Melody does have a photographic memory she can remember everything. But she can't let it out because can't talk. Everybody thinks Melody is dumb except for her mom. Melody's mom knows there is a spark in there somewhere. But what do they know they are not Melody. There is a couple of different problems. One of the problems are, Melody can't talk when her mom enrolls her in school. She can't do anything she sits in the back of the room. But she soaks in information like a sponge. But finally something clears up for Melody. This part had me on the edge of my seat. I finished this 300 page book in 3 days! It was a page turner I couldn't put it down. If you like sad and suspenseful books you would love this one.
If you're a fan of Lauren Tarshis the writer of Storyworks, I Survived The Battle of Gettysburg is the book for you.
The story takes place in 1863 on the way to Gettysburg. Thomas and Birdie are escaped slaves who are trying to find their cousin Clem. Later they run into the Union on their way to Gettysburg. Then Birdie gets kidnapped! Will Thomas and Birdie survive? This is a great book so I recommend it! There are also lots of great words to live by. Hello!

I miss you already! I am so proud of the work that you did this year in reading class. I know that you will take all that you have learned with you into the future. Keep working on getting in the zone while you read! I know that I really learned a lot about new books through the book talks that we gave in class. My "someday list" grew to great lengths! Keep referring back to your list this summer when you aren't sure what to read next. Visit the public library and stock up with these great books! If you read a book that you would rate a 9 out of 10, share it with us here! Perhaps we would also like to add it to our list! Remember to not give away too much. Here are some things that you can add in your online book talk: genre, why you liked it, who would enjoy reading it, characters, main problem, themes, etc. Try to write clearly and with your best writing skills. I look forward to hearing about all of your good reads over the summer. Feel free to leave comments, but make sure they are related to the topic and kind to each other. Much love, Mrs. Lang Hello Reading Class!
Here is another poem that I would like you to respond to by leaving a well-thought out comment below. Just like we have been doing in class, respond to someone else's response and then add your own thoughts - new thoughts. What poetic elements are found in this poem? How do they enhance the poem? What does this poem make you think/feel? Why? What questions do you have about it? Keep the conversation going. Be detailed, accurate in your grammar (capitalization/punctuation), and have fun!! Rathers By Mary Austin I know very well what I’d rather be If I didn’t always have to be me! I’d rather be an owl, A downy feathered owl, A wink-ity, blink-ity, yellow-eyed owl In a hole in a hollow tree. I’d take my dinner in chipmunk town, And wouldn’t I gobble the field mice down, If I were a wink-ity, blink-ity owl, And didn’t always have to be me! I know very well what I’d like to do If I didn’t have to do what I do! I’d go and be a woodpecker, A rap-ity, tap-ity, red-headed woodpecker In the top of a tall old tree. And I’d never take a look At a lesson or a book, And I’d scold like a pirate on the sea, If I only had to do what I like to do, And didn’t always have to be me! Or else I’d be an antelope, A pronghorned antelope, With lots of other antelope Skimming like a cloud on a wire-grass plian. A bounding, bouncing antelope, You’d never get me back to my desk again! Or I might be a puma, A singe-colored puma, A slinking, sly-foot puma As fierce as fierce could be! And I’d wait by the waterholes where antelope drink In the cool of the morning And I do not think That ever any antelope could get away from me. But if I were a hunter, A red Indian hunter – I’d like to be a hunter, – I’d have a bow made of juniper wood From a lightning-blasted tree, And I’d creep and I’d creep on that puma asleep A flint tipped arrow, An eagle feathered arrow, For a puma kills calves and a puma kills sheep, And he’d never eat any more antelope If he once met up with me! Friends By Abbie Farwell Brown How good to lie a little while And look up through the tree! The Sky is like a kind big smile Bent sweetly over me. The Sunshine flickers through the lace Of leaves above my head, And kisses me upon the face Like Mother, before bed. The Wind comes stealing o'er the grass To whisper pretty things; And though I cannot see him pass, I feel his careful wings. So many gentle Friends are near Whom one can scarcely see, A child should never feel a fear, Wherever he may be. I have been so impressed with the way that the students have so quickly picked up on the routines and procedures of 5th grade. There is a lot to keep organized, and they have done a great job. I feel so blessed to be able to work at such a great school with great parents, teachers and students. I'm already looking forward to what this year will bring!
Mrs. Lang What are you looking forward to in 5th grade? What has been the best part of the first two weeks? |
